The BIG Lift
Moving the Tod Engine Parts - June, 1997

The first task was to lift the top half of the flywheel and ship it out. On the left both cranes, the 35 ton Grove and the 50 ton Link Belt pull the wheel apart, and on the right here is the wheel half leaving the blooming mill building.

After spinning the other half of the flywheel to the top and removing it, the crankshaft was lifted off the HP bed plate. Then the plate was broken free from the ground and loaded onto a flatbed. How graceful that 50 ton casting looks floating through the air!

I am standing on the EOT crane in the north end of the plate mill building filming the two bedplates passing underneath on their way to our storage area at the other end of this vast mill building.

One of the flywheel halves entering the plate mill building. On the right, the crankshaft leaves the confines of the blooming mil building for the first time in eighty four years!

The crankshaft and flywheel half still on the trailers and yet to be unloaded in the storage area. On the right is what we were all working toward for 10 months, the Tod Engine completely removed from the blooming mill building!
